I had the pleasure of hearing you at the Holocause conference at PLU last week. I was very moved by your story and my son and I learned so much at the conference. I have a couple of pictures that I wanted to send to you but wasn’t sure what address to send them.

    • gelbaum says:

Thanks much for your comment – I’m glad that you & your son appreciated what you heard at the conference – and thanks for your offer of photos. Please send them to me at gelbaum@alum.mit.edu – I’ll add these to the photos my wife took plus those I’ll be getting from PLU’s photographer, and from these I’ll choose 1-2 dozen to post on my weblog. Thanks again, George

    Dear Mr. Elbaum,

Thank you for visiting our school again, Kent Mountain View Academy. You made such an impact on our students a few years ago in Than To Do’s class. Mr. Gallagher came to me in January, and asked if I would like my students to be a part of another speaking engagement with you in February. I jumped at this once-in-a-lifetime chance for my students!

Our essential question for our integrated unit on The Holocaust and Lois Lowry’s The Giver is: Why is memory important for our society and futures? The students and I have been discovering some of the answers to this question, and we are using historical facts and text evidence to answer this question.

The students have been producing excellent work and are thinking deeply about this question as we learn more and more about memory and its importance in shaping who we want to be. Today, your visit, added a human element, that could not be read in a book, or explained by an instructor.

Although your memories can be painful to share at times, I want to give you a heartfelt thanks for sharing them with young people.

As I sat in the audience, behind my class, I looked at each one of them, and felt a wave of emotion come over me. Holocaust survivors are few nowadays, and I felt joy and pride, in knowing that your memories would be passed on to my students families and their future families.

Please be on the lookout for some packages that will arrive to you, by the 6th grade class at Kent Mountain View Academy! The buzz in my classroom after your talk was invigorating! You touched many hearts today.

    Thank You,

Mrs. Patti Billet (6th Grade Teacher at KMVA)

Dear George, I am so proud to see my school on a long list of your speaking events. We hope to host you again in Warsaw in 2017. It is so amazing that you document your speaking events here and that you devote a note plus photos to each and every visit. My very best to you.
    Viola T.

    • gelbaum says:

      Viola,
I’m glad that you like the way my website shows a bit of the schools and the students to whom I speak, both by their photos and by their questions in the Q&A. I speak often of your great work with your students in conveying to them your love of Warsaw’s history, and of the audience you gathered for my first speaking event in Warsaw. I look forward to returning to your school next year.
      My very best, George

  4. Jane Butterfield says:

I just read your book. Wonderful! Do you have plans to speak in Washington, DC? I’d like to attend.

    • gelbaum says:

Jane, thanks much for your comment, and I’m glad you liked my book. “Speaking Events” on my website lists all past & currently planned events, which so far have been or are planned only in California, Boston-area, Seattle-Tacoma area and Poland. I do not have plans to visit Washington DC this year, but if and when I do, it will definitely be listed on my website and would probably be arranged by Facing History & Ourselves, which has been arranging my talks in the San Francisco Bay and Boston areas. Sorry, but that’s the best I can offer now 🙂
      George

  5. Sean Moore says:

    Hi Mr. Elbaum,

Thanks for speaking yesterday at the World Affairs Council. Your story was awesome and had a great impact on me. I know many people say this to you, but I really did think your talks make a difference. I hope you continue to inspire students like me to remember the Holocaust and keep and open mind. Once again, thanks!

PS I think you should’ve gotten five strikes

    • gelbaum says:

      Sean,
Thanks much for your kind words – making a difference is the reason I do these talks, and as long as I get feedback such as yours I’ll continue.
By the way, I read your message to my wife and when I got to your “five strikes” comment we both burst out laughing. Thanks for that also!
      George

Thanks for coming to IMS today!
I was the last one on the end of the front row on the right hand column.
Again, thanks for coming, I’ve been looking forward to this for a while and it was very influential 🙂
